The Song of the Streets

The rustling of leaves,

Humming of bees,

Yelping and frolicking of prancing dogs,

Flipping pages of an abandoned catalogue,

Heated squabble of an unhappy couple

Trying to hear themselves over their children’s scuffle,

Splash of water by someone’s unfortunate foot in a puddle

Proceeded by an annoyed grunt for getting into this muddle,

Deep-throated coos of pigeons and shrill little whistles of sparrows,

Slight buzz of electricity as the overhead lamp glows-

Together create a perfect cocktail of babble around me

As I saunter home, savouring this melody.

But then I open the chestnut doors home,

And there’s not a

Single.

Damn.

Noise.
